Planet Earth: 21st Century. Postcards of a virtual journey by Daniela Comani Sumber foto : - On the occasion of the Day of Contemporary Art, promoted by the AMACI – Association of Italian Museums of Contemporary Art, the Embassy of Italy, the Italian Cultural Institute Jakarta in collaboration with the Embassy of Switzerland proudly present a contemporary art exhibition “Planet Earth: 21st Century: Postcards of a virtual journey” by Daniela Comani, which will be inaugurated on 13 October 2018.  In the following week we organize an Artist Talk with Daniela Comani, which will open the 18th Week of the Italian Language in the World.  The exhibition is open for public until 13 November 2018. 

Daniela Comani lives and works in Berlin.  Her multimedia installations engage in a dialogue about history, identity, gender and alienation. Her work focuses on media images and language which she manipulates through photography, text-based works and installation. Often working with materials from newspapers, books, television and the internet, she challenges foreignness and intimacy, history and interpretation.  Her works are frequently published as artist books, and function as art pieces that she conceives and designs, working with Edition Patrick Frey, Zürich; Archive Books, Berlin, among others. 

Daniela Comani’s work has been shown internationally and is included in the collections of Museum on the Seam, Jerusalem, Museo d’Arte Moderna, Bologna, Kupferstichkabinett of the Berlin State Museums, Musée Les Abattoirs, Toulouse, Farnesina Contemporary Art Collection in Rome, and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Los Angeles.

The starting point of Daniela Comani’s work “Planet Earth: 21st Century” stemms from visual material sourced from Apple Maps. Apple bought the 3D software “Flyover” from Saab-Military Industries in 2011 in order to compete with Google Maps, for use on mobile devices. This App is a mix of satellite images and 3D illustrations. As the user, you can fly through the cities or even the country, however the maps are still being developed. This distinguishes Apple Maps from Google Earth (satellite images) and Google Street View (360-degree panoramic photos).

Experiencing cities of the world becomes accessible to everyone. Similar to standing in front of a postcard stand, the user (the traveller) can choose their favorite virtual city view, like a souvenir of the trip “Around the world in one day”.

Daniela Comani flew through the cities and made her own pictures, turning them into black and white. The spoils of her virtual trip are numerous postcards with streets, buildings, and monuments from cities around the world and without people. The expression of the photos and also the iconographic effect of certain buildings or cityscapes make these places appear real. They are foreign yet familiar.

Through Apple 3D technology, the cities become a virtual reality; then, with Comani’s collected visual material, postcards are printed, referencing the analog field.  The postcard as mass medium is a consequence of aerial photography. In the beginning of the 20th century, picture postcards with aerial photographs of cities were very popular, with the golden age of the picture postcard dating about 100 years ago.

In the work “It Was Me. Diary 1900-1999” Daniela Comani wrote a personalized history of 20th Century events as re-enactment.  Re-enacting geography, the focal point of the project “Planet Earth” is the interaction between human perception of the planet and technology of the 21st Century.

At the Italian Cultural Institute Jakarta, Daniela Comani shows a wall installation with a sequence of the city views and a selection of the prints as postcards that the visitors can take with them.
